We have two more fun classes at our Murray location this January. We hope you are enjoying this line-up; classes are such a great way to meet new friends, learn new techniques, and complete more projects.

On January 25th, we will have our Snap Bag class from 6-7:30pm. This would make a great gift for yourself or maybe finish a Mother's Day gift early this year!

On January 28th, we will have our Fun & Easy Edges class from 10:30-11:30am. Learn some amazing new crochet edges. You could use this technique on our flannel burp cloths or receiving blankets. They get so much attention at baby showers!

Sandy Store Classes

We have an amazing round up of classes at our Sandy location this year!

We have 3, yes 3, block parties!

First up is Buggy Barn Farm Fresh applique quilt block party. Our classes will be held on the second Saturday of the month at 12:30.

Next up is Quilts For Rosie - a paper piece block party from the 1940's. Classes will be on the second Saturday of the month at 10:30am and Tuesday at 6:00pm.

Last, but certainly not least is the Red &White, Merry & Bright block party. Classes will be on the second Saturday of the month at 11:30 and following Wednesday at 11:30am.

This would be an amazing quilt to have completed for next Christmas. There are 3 embroidered and 12 pieced blocks.

Holiday Shop Hop

"Seams" like Christmas...

Come join us for the Holiday Shop Hop at our Murray*, Sandy and Provo Cotton Shops on October 12 - 15th. (Store hours will be 9 AM to 8 PM Monday through Friday and 10 AM to 6 PM on Saturday, October 15th.) We will have fun, games, prizes and some great sales. We hope to see you there!

During the Hop we have a special "Breast Cancer" project. We will have fat quarters available for $2 each, add another fabric or two and make a 12 1/2" block. Return it and any others you would like to make, to any of our 16 Holiday Shop Hop stores (along with the tag with your information on it) by JANUARY 31, 2012.

These blocks will be made into quilts and donated to the Utah Cancer Foundation on your behalf, for the purpose of raising money for research and education on this dreaded disease that kills millions of women and men worldwide. Come help us support a great and worthy cause!

I have to apologize for not posting anything for the tutorial this week. I have been working on a quilt and some other things for a sweet employee Jolyn who just found out she has Pancreatic Cancer. She is a employee at our Sandy store and she has been a ray of sunshine and we really miss her. So that has been my excuse, so sorry. Look for the pattern next week and we will get it going.

You Will Need 1/2 yard of 5 different fabrics

these are the ones I chose.

1/2 yard if the brown. this is used for the cupcake papers.

You will need a 1/8 yd of a plain cream and brown, I used Kona Cotton. This is for the cake that shows between the icing and paper.

I know I don't have the finished project to show and it is because I am doing this along with each of you. I will be posting the pattern this week. So that you can start getting your stuff cut out.

Here again is the picture of the cupcake square! There are 15 cupcake squares and then 15 striped squares and these are made from the extra fabric that is used for the background blocks and icing on the cupcakes.

Here is a fun pattern and how to on a wedding cake pin cushion.

Wedding Cake Pin Cushion

This is dedicated to the two cute ladies that always come into the Sandy store that always have a smile on their faces. This is for you gals!!!!

The items you will need to create this darling pin cushion are:

1 black, white and red felt squares

1/2 yd of medium sized ric rac, black,white and red

a glue gun

buttons for embellishing

1/4 yd of stiff heavy non-iron on interfacing

a scrap of cute fabric big enough to cut a 5 inch circle

Take each color of felt and with a Olfa rotary cutter, ruler and mat cut your strips for each tier of cake.

The bottom tier is out of black felt. Cut 5 strips at 1 1/2 inches wide and the length of a a felt square. Repeat with middle tier that is red and cut 3 strips 1 /14 in wide

Top tier is white with 1 strip 1 inch wide and another that is 1 inch by 3 inches long.

Start rolling your felt strips, starting with the bottom tier, your black felt. Keep rolling each piece on right next to the last until you have used all 5 pieces. (look and picture below on how to add each piece)

Adding the next strip.

Then you want to hot glue with glue gun the last rolled on strip. Then repeat these steps with the red and white felt.

Then take your ric rac pieces the red needs to be cut 8 1/2 inches long, white is 6 1/4 inches, and 4 1/2 for the black. Hot glue to the back side of rolled cake tier where the seam is and press down your ric rac.Roll around the cake and add another dot of hot glue to finish attaching ric rac. Repeat with the other tiers. Red goes on the black tier, white on the red tier and black on the top tier of cake.

Now your ready to make the plate the cake will sit on. I found a baby cereal bowl that was five inches around and traced it onto the heavy interfacing. I then cut the circle out.You just need one 5 inch circle.

Then I pinned the heavy interfacing onto my scrap of fabric and cut a 1/4 inch seam around the circle. You need two of these fabric circles cut out.

Place your inter facing inbetween the two pieces of fabric with the right sides of the fabric showing on top and on bottom

Sew around the edge using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. I used a decorative stitch and it made it really cute.

Take your pinking shears and trim around the edges to give it a cute finished edge.

Assemble by hot gluing the black tier onto the plate and then glue the red tier and follow with the white.

Then to finish off this cute pin cushion you can embellish with yoyos and vintage buttons. On mine I made the small yo-yo and then hot glued a vintage button from my great grandma's button collection.

You are now finished and you have a darling pincushion that you can put in your sewing room or give away as a fun little gift. It doesn't even cost that much to make and all the supplies can be purchased at The Cotton Shop. You can even change it up by doing all different colors of felt and ric rac. HAPPY DAY!!!!

It is HMQ (Home Machine Quilting Show) time. This is my first time of going and helping at this show and man is it fun. What a production this is to put this show on. The Cotton Shop has 12 booths so that tells you how much time has been put into this show. We have AWESOME sales on all machines,besides good prices there is free packages that are being given with each machine purchase. I can't believe the deals, did I mention it is AWESOME!!! Totally worth coming and seeing us.
The quilts that people have made and entered into the contest are just amazing and fun to see also. You can even come and make something for FREE at our booth to take home. Everybody who has come to do this can't believe we are doing this for FREE!!! So grab a friend and come see us.
